Car rental was the big issue in 2009. With the recession in clear view, the rental companies ordered fewer cars, then put their prices up. Worse still, demand didn’t drop, so the rental companies found cars wherever they could, often three years old or more in shabby condition.
We had really bad experiences with Record, previously our favourite company. In the summer on a Saturday we queued for 90 minutes to get to the desk and weren’t in our car for another 30 minutes. It was fine in October but on both occasions the cars were in dreadful. Staff have a take it or leave it attitude.
We hadn’t paid up front in either case but couldn’t get anywhere near the price we agreed with Record at any of the other desks. You pays your money, etc. So if you go through a broker, check who the final car rental company is before you commit.
